Surf Photography of the 1960s and 1970s by Taschen, captures the golden era of surfing. LeRoy Grannis surfer since 1931 was america’s most important photographer of that time. Dubbed the “Godfather of surf photography” by The New York Times. He captured the bliss of catching the perfect wave at San Onofre to dramatic wipeouts at Oahu’s famous North Shore. It was time where the boards were long and beautifully made, when people drove woody station wagons along the Pacific Coast Highway, and hoards of fans would gather at surf contests. Surfing was still in its young years but rapidly developing into a lifestyle that has become mainstream today. These were the heydays of surfing that are delight to look back at today.

Did you know: LeRoy Grannis was an innovator and a precursor of the GoPro where he used a suction-cupped a waterproof box to his board, enabling him to change film in the water and stay closer to the action than any other photographer of the time. (source)
