Cocooned by a 30-acre expanse of exotic plants, orchards and olive groves, Pure House Ibiza is as rooted in its lush tropical garden as its mango trees. Owners Caroline and Rushan have given the interiors a modern update: calm beige and ivory tones offset quirky Balinese detailing and unique sculptures; outdoors, white canopies fringe the glittering saltwater pool, and guests sip sundowners from their gently swaying hammocks under thatched cabanas.
AMALFI COAST – Maison La Minervetta
Maison La Minervetta clings to the cliffs of Sorrento on the Amalfi coast with spectacular views of the Bay of Naples from the pool and sun terrace. All rooms are sea-facing with floor-to-ceiling windows to let in that swoon-inducing ocean panorama.
Set within an amphitheatrical landscape of curves stepping down to a black stone terrace, hotel Perivolas stands out from Oia’s whitewashed cliffside. Once the homes, wineries and stables of Santorini’s fishermen and farmers, this group of 300-year-old caves has been transformed into a complex of serene private houses, with a spectacular pool flowing over the edge of the cliff into an Aegean horizon.
SARDINIA-Petra Segreta Resort & Spa
In a hillside hamlet amid juniper bushes, white granite boulders and Holm oaks, Petra Segreta Resort & Spa’s traditional stazzi farmhouse buildings offer charm and calm on the idyllic Costa Smeralda. This boutique hotel is a romantic retreat close to Olbia’s beautiful beaches. To sample the best of Sardinian cuisine, look no further than the hotel’s restaurant.
Casa Talia, an intimate seven-room B&B hotel in the heart of Unesco-protected Modica, is the brainchild of two Milanese designers – who have used the hotel as a showcase for their classy stylings. Modern features complement a layout inspired by Sicily’s rich cultural past, and the result is a laid-back retreat in the midst of the island’s sun-baked countryside.
Built right into Monopoli’s ancient seafront ramparts, hotel Don Ferrante is a labyrinthine hideaway: an elegant tangle of narrow staircases, pretty patios and vaulted limestone ceilings. With just 10 rooms, this whitewashed Puglian retreat charms guests into a slower pace of life. Linger on the terrace over fresh Mediterranean fare, slink into the dinky rooftop pool and soak up those dazzling Adriatic views.
Calling something sublime sets up certain expectations: Sublime Comporta doesn’t disappoint, thanks to its sleepy bucolic setting (in easy reach of Portugal’s best beach), minimalist design – all glittering glass, white wood and modernist va-va-voom – and delicious Portuguese food. This handsome hotel’s romantic rooms and cosy cabanas occupy a bucolic 17-acre patch of woodlands and wildflowers, home to a knee-weakening pool with a fire pit beyond it, designed for sultry, sociable nights. If you go home without trying the grilled black pork, pan-fried garlic prawns or eight-or-so mojitos, we haven’t done our job properly.
Set in a theatre-filled patch of Porto, Hotel Teatro was made for the stage. Showy spotlights, an opulent use of black and gold, and cabinets of costumes make it a natural performer.
A seductively stylish red brick townhouse in Stockholm’s upmarket Lärkstaden neighbourhood, hotel Ett Hem couldn’t have chosen a more fitting moniker: it simply means ‘a home’ in Swedish. Owner Jeanette Mix has scoured Europe for the design staples and vintage finds that have transformed this luxurious Arts and Crafts residence, opening it up to be used as guests see fit. Help yourself to wine from the fridge, pinch a book from the library and settle in for a cosy afternoon in the glasshouse: this is the new benchmark for laid-back Swedish hospitality.
A teeter from Capri Town’s pretty-as-a-postcard Piazzetta, and a sashay down dainty boutique-resplendent alleyways, is Capri Tiberio Palace, a friendly five-star hotel. A confection of sugared-almond shades and pop-arty curios, designer Giampiero Panepinto’s pretty, witty decor instantly slips you into holiday mode. Whether you flop poolside and make new friends on the terrace, or explore the island as a twosome, this Capri boutique hotel promises hidden-away vacations laced with treatments at Spa Tiberio, zingy cocktails and delizioso Mediterranean dining.
