While sitting on the beach in Biarritz I could not help but notice the board a surfer was carrying. It was very different to the surfboards you usually see that are either made with resin, epoxy or foam. The material on this one looked as if it were made out of cork. Having never seen anything like it before it triggered my curiosity which led me to find out more. The make of the board was “Notox” which is a French brand established since 2006 located in the Basque country. There are strong green ethics that are at the origin of that name as its founders wanted to create sustainable eco-built surfboards that respect the environment. Notox’s manufacturing process and materials leave as little impact as possible contrary to traditionally made surfboards. Their materials are sourced only 700 km away contrary to an average of 9000 km, using recycled EPS, flax fabrics, biosourced resin, non-VOC cleaner, and also cork. This results in a surfboard that is 75% recyclable producing less than than half of its weight in waste. Thanks to their production process the boards are performant as they are lighter and more resistant. From an aesthetic point of view you want to own one just for its looks. We can only admire the work and ethics Notox stand for and hope they will inspire others in surf industry to follow the same path. More info
Did you know: Currently there are up to 63 million surfboards in use worldwide*. At the end of their lives, they will become landfill. There are no large-scale surfboard recycling solutions.(source)
