If you happen to visit Melbourne do not miss the “David Hockney: Current” exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV to locals). The exhibition shows over 1,200 of David Hockney’s works that include paintings, digital drawings, photography and video works done over the past decade. But what is most remarkable are his works done on an iPad and iPhone including a number that are animated. The colours, compositions, as well as the execution are simply amazing. You would never think you could achieve such beautiful work using such a small device. Hockney’s exploration into the digital just goes to show you his incredible talent can be applied anywhere, no matter the medium used. There are digital drawings representing still life compositions, landscapes and self portraits. I had to turn back a few times in the exhibition to see the works again and the way he composed them which put our Insta selfies and Snapchat vids to shame.
Did you know: In 1990, Hockney was offered a knighthood but he declined.
