At the recent annual WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference), Apple announced the launch of its latest product, the Apple Homepod. Should we get excited about it? We will have to wait until December to find out. So what does the Homepod do? It will offer assistant functions with Siri similar to its competitors like the Echo by Amazon or the Google Home. But already we are hearing the flaws about Siri and the much needed improvements needed to convince us to use it as a dailly assistant while its competitors seem to function better (see this article by The Verge). The system is presented into Apple’s own system which is pretty limiting. For example, the music service supported is only open to Apple music, whereas the Amazon’s and Google’s home assistants are an open platform with a plethora of music services available such as; Amazon Music, Prime Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, Spotify Premium, Pandora, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, Audible etc… It will take a lot of convincing for people to accept such limitations. So Apple’s pitch during the conference was not so much focused on the assistant function, but more on the use of the Apple Homepod as a quality speaker delivering exceptional sound. With an expected price of $349, which is high compared to its competitors, we ask ourselves if the if it’s worth the move. With these factors in-hand, the Apple Homepod is in a somewhat blurry zone, with competition already offering more efficient home assistant options and other wireless speaker brands already providing quality offerings.
